"Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee." Many of us remember this line from the Broadway musical and 1978 movie Grease. But did you know that these words were also spoken by the 21 year old Hanna Liina Võsa in the lead role of Sandy? She was chosen out of a field of 1000 hopefuls and performed in 38 cities (including Toronto) in a ten month tour across North America in 2003. Hanna Liina has also played lead roles in a number of top musicals in Estonia, including "The King and I" (Tuptimi), "Little Shop of Horrors" (Audrey), "West Side Story" (Maria), "Phantom of the Opera" (Christine) and "My Fair Lady" (Eliza). She also played Penny in the Finnish version of "Hairspray" in Helsinki. Read more about her upcoming performances and shows here.
One of her teachers was Ave Kumpas, the early childhood education music teacher and co-creator of the ETV show "Laulukarussell" - a televised talent show for kids under 16. Some of the contestants have represented Estonia at the Eurovision festival, others have become stars - Liisi Koikson, Gerli Padar, Hando Nahkur, Hanna-Liis Nahkur and Kerli Kõiv, to name a few!
Ave Kumpas and her daughter Jana Silma have recently released a wonderful book and 2 CD collection of 40 songs for children ages 2 to 8: Väikese lapse laulud 2. Available at the Magic Islands library!
