Tour de France - Rein Taaramäe is moving up!

Taaramae moves closer to top 10
Jul 14, 2011
Jared Grellet
PARIS, France – "Estonia’s Rein Taaramae has moved up to 16th overall in the Tour de France despite losing time on race leader Thomas Voeckler of France.   After 12 stages Taaramae is sitting seven minutes, 27 seconds behind Voeckler and just under three minutes outside of the race top 10". He is currently in 16th place - 2nd best best young rider overall!

Rein is 24, born in Tartu, Estonia, rider number 151 for Cofidis. His code name is vader, short for reinuvader (fox).

The hardest segments of the Tour de France for an Estonian loom ahead: the mountains. Rein has faithfully been writing his blog - read it and keep your fingers crossed (hoia põialt!) that he makes it to the finish line. A top 10 finish is a lofty goal but not impossible! Next Stage: Touri mägedeetapp!

Bastille Day - Prisoners Released!

Storming of the Bastille,  Jean-Pierre Houël (1735-1813)
July 14, 1789 - Storming of the Bastille Prison in Paris, France:  the beginning of the French Revolution and  the birthday of the modern French nation celebrated by fireworks and the oldest and largest regular military parade in Europe.

"Besides holding a large cache of ammunition and gunpowder, the Bastille had been known for holding political prisoners whose writings had displeased the royal government".
For instance, the Marquis de Sade. He then managed to write "The 120 Days of Sodom" IN the Bastille - but missed the storming, having been transferred to Charenton in early July 1789.

"As it happened, at the time of the siege in July 1789 there were only seven inmates, none of great political significance."  LINK  According to Antonia Fraser's book "Marie Antoinette - The Journey", the list included two madmen, four forgers and one nobly born criminal. (page 283).

Estonian Hostages Freed
On the same day over two hundred years later seven other prisoners (hostages), this time Estonians, were released with the help of the French government from the tiny Eastern Bekaa village of Arsal, an area known as the Wild West of the Middle East:

"The desert heat spills over the mountains from Syria, the streets are dusty, and elderly people sit silently by empty storefronts all day. But those aren’t the only resemblances.

If you’re a farmer, you carry a gun, locals say. The lands of most people in Arsal lie at the hudud, the border with Syria, which has never been properly demarcated. And because no Lebanese authority guards the border, the Syrian farmers have been encroaching on and stealing Lebanese land, villagers contend".
Read the article from Lebanon Now HERE.

According to the BBC, "a previously unknown group called Haraket Al-Nahda Wal-Islah, or Movement for Renewal and Reform, claimed to have carried out the kidnap, and demanded a ransom". Estonia relied on France and other NATO allies for their release as it has very few diplomatic staff in the region.  Read the story from Sky News., here is the Estonian new source: delfi.ee linkIt is interesting that Estonia has an embassy and six consulates in France - the same as in the United States!

Question: Which country is home to the largest number of Estonian citizens living abroad?

Bastille Day Military Parade 2011 - View the amazing photo gallery here: LINK
This year's parade highlighted France's overseas territories, such as Guadeloupe, Guyana, Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, New Caledonia and Polynesia but was overshadowed by the worst French losses in Afghanistan since 2008.

"Another French soldier was killed on Thursday, meaning that seven have died over the past week. On Wednesday five French soldiers and an Afghan civilian were killed, and four other troops injured, in a suicide bomb attack on a meeting of local village leaders in Joybar, in the Kapisa province north east of Kabul.

’We are now faced with more terrorist-type actions, not just military action’, Mr Sarkozy told reporters after meeting wounded soldiers in Afghanistan at the Percy military hospital. ’It is a new situation and to deal with this new situation requires new safety measures’ ” LINK.

Võnnu - Cēsis - Wenden 1.osa

Võidud Võnnus ajaloos...
Cēsis, ehitatud 1209.a  Foto: Brunswyk

Henriku Liivimaa kroonika. Tõlkinud Richard Kleis, toimetanud ja kommenteerinud Enn Tarvel. Tallinn, 1982, XIV, 8):

The O-Sound (O-Töne)

TON *Germann. sound, tone, pip, note; intonation, rise and fall of the voice in speech; clay, type of soil used to make pottery and bricks, soil which contains high percentage of silicates of aluminum.

O-Töne (sound bites, "original sounds") - annual contemporary Literature Festival held in the Museum Quarter in Vienna during July and August. This year the Festival had a head start with a preview concert on June 20 (Summer Solstice). After a reading by Hungarian author Péter Esterházy, Estonian singer Siiri Sisask performed a series of songs from her latest CD, "Linga Mea" to coincide with 20 years of Estonian re-independence (celebrated on August 20th.) See the article in Eesti Päevaleht here and read the German here.

Siiri was accompanied by Kristjan Randalu (piano) and his jazz quartet: Carsten Netz (clarinet, saxophone,, synthesizers) Oliver Potratz (bass) ja Paul Wiltgen (percussion), and the string quartet Helenos from Germany. Listen to clips from "Lingua Mea" here.  Can you here the influence of Korean and Mongolian music intertwined with Estonian Setu?

Museum Quarter in Vienna - celebrates 10!
You could call this "Mother of all Museums" the European remedy to giant North American shopping malls, such as the  Vaughan Mills Mall (north of Toronto). But without the Bass Pro bait shop:-) Imagine 20 museums and cultural organizations presenting programs in performing arts, architecture, music, fashion, theater, dance, literature, children's and digital culture all in one area in roof, so to speak. Along with 40 living spaces and terrace cafés, bars, shops and a wonderful courtyard. This summer:
Leopold Museum - Egon Schiele lovers paradise.
MUMOK - exhibits moved outside, re-opening September 8  Kunsthalle- Salvador Dali exhibit. More exhibit info here.

The O-Töne Festival was started by Gabriela Hegedus and Christoph Möderndorfer in 2005 and featured contemporary Austrian authors presenting original works (unpublished) every Thursday evening in July and August.  This summer, from July 7 to August 25, an Austrian and European author will present as a duo - here's the lineup - what an amazing place to visit!

Opening concert: Meaghan Burke
Opening lecture: Sabine Gruber (AT): "Still Bach or The Longing"

Öö nagu ööbik

Foto: Saarte Hääl
Syktyvkar, Komi Republic - June 12, 2011
Can you guess what this is? A symbol of the Finno-Ugric people, language and culture! The letter Ö was carved into granite by sculptor Aleksandr Võborov and unveiled in a ceremony in front of the Komi Cultural Centre last week. Although the idea to create a single unifying symbol was initiated by the Komi language and history expert Aleksei Rassõhajev in 2008, it took some time to organize. The  final location was decided by internet voting on the official administration website.

The letter Ö is revered by the speakers of the Komi, Khanty, Hansi and Udmurtia languages in Russia belonging to the Finno-Ugric family. It is interesting that the õ vowel is found in Russian, but ö, ü and ä are not!

In Estonian, from Saarte Hääl:
Komi keelt, rahvast ja kultuuri sümboliseeriva mälestussamba püstitamise idee pakkus välja komi keele, kirjanduse ja ajaloo instituudi teaduslik töötaja Aleksei Rassõhajev. Samba autor on skulptor Aleksandr Võborov.

When learning the following Estonian vowels or täishäälikud, we learn to associate them with the following words:
Õ = õun,  Ä= ämblik, Ö = ööbik, Ü = ümbrik

....but does Ö in Estonian always stand for ööbik? Here's a list of the many possible variations in Estonian counties, from http://www.estinst.ee

70 aastat tagasi, ööl vastu 14. juunit 1941 algas esimene massiküüditamine, Eestis, Lätis, Leedus ühekorraga. Eestis oli plaanis küüditada 14 471 inimest, paari päevaga veeti ära üle kümne tuhande inimese.

TALLINN
LOE TÄISMAHUS: Surmalaagritest nopiti eestlasi „Traviatat” ja „Silvat” laulma
Jaanus Piirsalu

Elusat „rahvaste isa” Stalinit nähes tabas teda pettumus. „Ta oli vana roti näoga, hallid sorakil vuntsid rippusid suure nina all. Nägu oli rõugearmiline ja kahvatu. Aga portreedel oli nagu operetikangelane, üles puhvitud.

Need read on pärit 1908. aastal Lätis Liibavis (Liepajas) sündinud Juhan Sillaku seni avaldamata mälestustest. Stalinit nägi ta sõja ajal 1942. aastal Kremlis lavalt, kus ta laulis Eesti NSV riiklike kunstiansamblite meeskooris Harri Kõrvitsa juhatamisel. Stalin istus lava poolt vaadates kolmandas reas." Praegu on täis jutt lehes - lugege edasi SIIT.

"Okupatsioonide muuseum on esimene muuseumiks ehitatud hoone Eestis. Selleks korraldatud arhitektuurivõistlusel osales 50 võistlustööd. Arhitektuurivõistluse programm määras ehitise otstarbe - anda adekvaatset informatsiooni Eesti lähimineviku okupatsioonirežiimide kohta, jäädvustada hukkunute mälestus memoriaalina ning võimaldada ka väiksemate seminaride läbiviimist. Ette oli antud ka erakapitalist rahastatava ehitus-eelarve suurus 1-1.5 miljonit US dollarit."
